Okay, so I’m contemplating a move from my current job as an online rep at Cingular to an online rep at Bellsouth. Here are the pros and cons as I see it.
Pros
- Time at Cingular - 3 years, 6 months.
- Successful at the job (been in the top 10 reps since I returned in November).
- Perks are nice (3 weeks vacation per year, plus a very flexible attendance policy, plus rewards for doing well like Cingular Summit, free phones, free stuff with Cingular Rewards, monthly reward lunches, etc.)
- I work for a good manager…one that doesn’t hound me about numbers because he knows I’m going to perform. And I should be able to choose to stay on his team as long as I want.
- I have seniority which means I have a nice shift, Monday-Friday, no weekend work, no overtime work.
- I can do the job with one hand tied behind my back and blind-folded.
- After the first year at Bellsouth, my time in title at Cingular carries over, which would mean I’d be a tenured employee at Bellsouth after that first year.
- I live literally 2 miles from my office now, the Bellsouth office would require a 15-20 minute commute each day.
Cons
- Management potential is there at Cingular, but it could be another year to two years before a position comes available.
- The job is monotonous and can wear on you mentally (this probably applies to the Bellsouth job as well).
- Pay at Cingular isn’t what it is at Bellsouth, I’d be getting more in base and probably the same in commission, which would end up being around $10k more per year at target.
- I’m practically starting over at Bellsouth, as a new employee for the first year.
I think it comes down to this…do I want to leave Cingular, where I’m a big fish in a somewhat small pond, for Bellsouth, where I’d be starting over with everything for roughly $10-12k more per year?
Decisions…

1Go where you feel you’ll get the best deal. The days of companies being loyal to their employees…well, that’s gone, as I’m sure you know. Look out for number one. Numero uno.
And if all else fails, I’m always looking for a barista.

2Thanks, and as much as I love coffee drinks, I might just take you up on that.
