Like many Americans these days, Christy and I have a DVR…or Digital Video Recorder. This is a brilliant technological advancement for entertainment purposes, as it allows you to record your favorite programs to view them whenever you’d like. It’s great for us because Christy’s work schedule often has her getting home after 7pm and it’s nice to be able to not have to worry about our shows and just relax, fix dinner, exercise, etc. Or as was the case last night, babysit my almost 2-year old nephew.
Christy gets home around 7:30pm and after having Chinese food delivered (yay Yoe Express!), we get somewhat settled in for the American Idol results finale. We fire up the DVR, press ‘Play From Beginning’ and we’re off. We get about 20 minutes into the show and I’m finding that Christy, having to keep Brooks (our nephew) entertained, is not really watching the show. She’s not saying anything to me of course, wanting me to enjoy the show, but I felt really bad, so I suggested that since it’s recording, we can just play with Brooks for a while, then take him home when we were going to and come home and watch it when we can pay full attention to it. She agreed and so we stopped watching the show while it kept recording.
Let this be a lesson to you all (and those with a DVR probably know what I’m about to say)…FOX doesn’t know what an “on-time” show is all about, especially a live one.
We get home from taking Brooks home and fire the DVR back up, right where we left it, get through the entire 2 hours, and as we get closer to the end, when the entire group was singing it’s tribute to the Beatles, I notice on the timer that we’re running dangerously short on recorded show length left…and wouldn’t you know it, during the last commercial break, the recording stops. It just stops! So not only did we wait up for nothing, but we watched the entire results show without getting a result!
I immediately logged into americanidol.com and they are still treating the show as if it hasn’t happened yet, which at this time, it had been off the air in Birmingham for nearly 2 and a half hours. In a world of instant gratification, I’m surprised the instant the result was known coast-to-coast, they should’ve had some video up there, update the website, something. So I go to MSNBC.com and of course the lead story is American Idol. “Click Here To See Who Won” it says…so I clicked.
And that’s how I found out that Jordin won American Idol 2007.
How’s that for anti-climactic??
As far as the results show itself is concerned, I thought the show was great. Smokey Robinson and Gladys Knight singing with the guys and girls respectively, Green Day, Gwen Stefani, Tony Bennett, and a few of the former Idols coming back. I liked Taylor’s new song, and Kelly Clarkson did okay kicking the show off with her best Alanis Morrissette impression. I really liked the duet by Ruben and Jordin, I hope that goes on Jordin’s album.
And now that I know Jordin is the winner, I need to search the internets for the results footage online so I can actually see AND hear her declared the winner.
So another season of American Idol has come to a close. By far, this was the most controversial one in it’s 6-year history, but it was also the most enjoyable one. With “Idol Gives Back” and the entire Sanjaya mess, from Antonella and her pictures to Haley and her hooker outfits, from crazy hair and weird arrangements, it was all enough to make David Hasselhoff cry. Wait, that was last year…or was it…?

2The TiVo thing happened to my mom, too … And everyone else I know who watches AI and TiVo’d the finale. I lost count of how many people told me they were on the internet soon after, looking for the results. My nieces - faithful AI watchers even at three and six years old, were distraught that they missed the end at home because they fell asleep, and then again at Grandma’s house because of the TiVo!
