Posted by Mattie as american idol, blogosphere, music, the coolness, the day to day
If it hadn’t been nearly 10:30pm last night when we finished watching the results show last night, I would’ve come down here to the office to do my reaction post because I was surprised to say the least.
I have to hand it to American Idol…as we were going through the results last night, Christy reminded me that last year during “Idol Gives Back” Week, they didn’t send anybody home in the spirit of ‘giving’…or something like that. What they did, if you’ll remember, is carry the vote totals over from that week into the next week, combining those votes with the votes from the next week and eliminating two contestants in one show.
Well, as the contestants were called out this week, I started to think that might actually happen again this year. And I especially thought that when Kristy Lee Cook was not in the Bottom 3. To see Michael Johns, Carly Smithson, and Syesha Mercado in the Bottom 3 was 33% of a surprise. I really didn’t see Michael Johns being in the Bottom 3…I thought he had enough of a fan following to push him through on what was not his best night.
Boy was I wrong! Not only was he in the Bottom 3, but he is the one with the least number of votes, and I have to say, they pulled a bit of a gut-wrenching move there with Ryan reminding everyone that last year on Idol Gives Back Week they didn’t eliminate anyone, but this year they are saying goodbye to Michael Johns…unbelievable!!
I guess Syesha and KLC have more of a following than we think. Michael Johns is a very talented musician and singer, and I definitely see big things for him. And he gets to tour with Idol this summer, and there’s no telling what that could do to further launch his career. But as you could tell from the many reactions on stage and in the crowd…last night’s verdict was a stunner.
So we’re down now to our Top 7. I still think there are potentially two more lame ducks in the crowd (Syesha, KLC) and the rest are all (IMO) frontrunners. So we’ll see how it all shakes out next week!
So what did YOU think about the results?!?!

1I am very saddened that the hottie/talented Michael Johns has left the contest. It will not be the same. I do hope he still gets a record deal. I guess I will now have to say go David’s and Carley now!

3America got it all wrong, and it’s not all right.
Everyone in that room knew it, too. Usually Simon tells people exactly what they did wrong on the night they leave. Not this time; he said he would MISS Michael. I don’t know, y’all. I didn’t think this was his strongest week, but I thought there were others who did HORRIBLE and didn’t have the momentum Michael had. But hey, I fully believe that winning Idol is almost a liability in terms of longterm success (I.e., Ruben “One Trick Pony” Studdard, Taylor “Where is He Now” Hicks). I downloaded the stunning studio version of “It’s All Wrong” earlier this week. I hope Johns get a real record deal out of this. I think he’s got a handfull of hits left in him. Ugh. So much talent. I think we’re in for a few more weeks of shocking results.

4unbelievable. not that Michael was voted off because as I’ve mentioned I didn’t see the performances this week so I can’t say whether it was the right choice or not. what I find unbelievable is that during Ryan’s recapp of the judges comments he quoted Simon as saying KLC looked like a star tuesday night. Now I cannot fathom a performance by KLC that puts her in the star category. I just can’t. I am sad to see Michael go. Dream on is one of my favorite songs and I thought he sang it well last night. ANd did anyone else catch that shot of him from behind when he was really getting into the song? I’m not really one to point out cute butts (unless we’re speaking of my Liliana’s little derriere), but his was adorable.

5I am so sad to see him go and I am very frustrated at Ryan for being such a mean tease. I had completely forgotten about not sending anyone home last year and I got my hopes up. Michael was one of my favorites and I voted for him Tuesday night - unfortunately not enough. Oh well, hopefully we’ll see him soon with his own record deal - there is no question that the boy has got the talent and the looks!

6First let me say I’m so sad Michael is gone. I really, really, really wanted it to be Syesha, however, I have to say that I called him being in the bottom 3. Unfortunately I wrote that on Matt’s facebook wall so I have no proof on the blog, but as sad as I am, I feel a little vindicated from last week’s miss on calling the bottom 3! (Just kidding around Mattie!) Seriously, I thought Michael would be in the bottom this week, but I definitely didn’t think he would be going home. What a sad week =-(
