American Idol - Reaction to Top 11 Results Show

Or it’s more dubious subtitle…the “WTF?!?!?! Carly’s in the Bottom 3?!?!?!?!?!” post.

Seriously?! Carly Smithson?! Yeah, I think the wife called it…the voters had a case of “Oh she’ll be fine…she’s so good, surely other people will vote for her…” syndrome. And look what happens. Carly in the Bottom 3 is like putting cream cheese on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich…it just don’t go, babe.

(edit on Thursday - BTW…how’s this for living dangerously…Kristy Lee Cook has now been in the Bottom 2 three weeks in a row…and survived each and every time…)

Of course, when Ryan sent her to “safety” in the final segment of the show, she probably showed a little too much surprise then relief…but hey, maybe if the Idol thing doesn’t work out, she can talk to Syesha about an acting career.

About the show itself…I thought the changes from last week’s results show were evident and much needed. Having the contestants come out one by one was a nice touch. It sort of gave each one a bit of the spotlight to revel in and it gave the show a bit of ‘motion’. Also leaving out the whole Bottom 3 singing each song they did the night before was a nice touch. As I said last week, having each one of them perform their song is anti-climactic to what you want with that Final Song. So good call on the producer’s part to drop that little bit from the show.

I thought Kellie Pickler’s performance was okay, and she still looks hot. Probably more of her success is on how she looks rather than how she sounds, because to me, I don’t think I would ever buy her album, even if I was a country music fan. But she looks great, and hey, it ain’t all about how you sound.

So Amanda is gone…well, I know a handful of folks that will be happy she’s gone, and others that might be a bit sad. I think it was time, and you definitely could see it on her face. Almost relief…right? Well, I think this Top 10 (save one Kristy Lee Cook) is pretty damn strong, so I’ll be interested to see how it all shakes out in the weeks to come.

Oh, and I wasn’t all that blown away with the “mentors” they listed off…Andrew Lloyd Webber? Neil Diamond? Dolly Parton? They haven’t been relevant for years…why would Idol throw their contestants their way at this point? Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, but hey, maybe that’s all they could find.

So next week, our Top 10 kicks it into high gear with some non-Beatles related songs…yay! See you all next week…I’m going to watch Top Chef!

Congratulations, America. I hope you’re ALLLL looking forward to seeing Krisy Lee Cook singing “Eight Days a Week” on the 10 Ten Tour this coming year. Well, maybe this was for the best for Amanda. She can go back to the bars where her voice, monolithic style, and highlights will be more appreciated. I don’t know if I’ll even bother watching next week. Here’s the scenario: the bottom three will be Mulabay, KL Cook, and (Somebody who has no business being ranked that low, like, Michael Johns). Michael will be safe. Then they’ll kick off Mulabay, and we’ll all realize that KL Cook has become the new Sanjaya, or, as I like to call him, the talentless freakboy who ruined last season for everyone.

I for one am not going to miss Amanda Overmeyer. I liked the concept of her, but i’m not sure the talent was there to back it up. They’ve all still got something to prove to me. I don’t know if it was all the hype about how this was the “most talented group yet”, but I’m not super impressed by any of them, other than a handful of really great individual performances. Noone’s been consistently wonderful. Rooting for Brooke and Carly, though. Not sure any of the guys have what it takes to enter and hold their own in mainstream radio these days. It takes Chris Daughtry kind of talent and presence for that. we’ll see. . .
